EXTREME URBANISM IVLooking at hyper densityMumbai, India
The project investigates the issue of density in the island city and the dynamics of the FSI ( Floor space index=FAR) through the case of Dongri. As FSI is currently the primarily planning tool in the context of Mumbai regardless of the locality-which is practiced through the urban redevelopment policy DCR33 in which FSI incentives are used to stimulate redevelopment of dilapidated buildings. Hence the strategy of the project aims at restructuring the density and FSI at multiple levels. By addressing this issue at the metropolitan scale, super block scale and a cluster of blocks simultaneously. Through utilizing existing social infrastructure and landmarks as catalyst to restructure adjacent blocks. Negotiating the gradient of public space and the extension of the street section as a three dimensional thickened ground that mediates between different conditions of public and private space. While acting as a common ground for mixing of the local religious groups by connecting the religious datum with a public axis.
